Stump Grinding FAQ

Stump grinding involves using a grinding machine to shred the stump and surrounding roots into chips. Our stump cutter penetrates deep into the soil four to six inches to reach the root system at its source, cutting through even hardwood varieties with ease. Once finished, we pack the hole with the wood chips. The area around the tree can be used to make a new flower bed, or later, when the wood chips have fully settled, the ground can be prepped for sod.

We don’t recommend it. Though leaving a stump might seem harmless, it can cause  problems down the line. Even mowing around a stump can be hazardous. Not only do you run the risk of tripping on the roots, but they can also cause damage to your mower if you accidentally get too close. Those pesky roots can also prevent you from planing a new tree near the previous location, or can even create soft spots in your lawn as they rot, messing up your landscaping plans. Worse, over time rotting stumps can attract damaging insects like termites, carpenter ants, and fungal disease which can then spread to other trees or structures. Some tree species like Crape myrtles and Bradford Pears are notoriously persistent and will continue to sprout, targeting your sidewalks and driveway even after being cut down. To prevent any issues, we recommend stump grinding which destroys the root system as well as the stump.

While there are cases when stump removal is warranted, like in the case of uprooted trees damaged in storms, we prefer grinding to full removal. In fact, it’s the industry standard. Stump removal requires excavating deep below ground into the root system which is far more intrusive and destructive to your lawn. Not only is the required equipment larger, making it more difficult to access your stump, excavating also takes much longer and costs more.

Properly removing a stump is a labor-intensive task that most people don’t have the patience for. Instead of taking the time to rent the proper equipment, often times people hook up a stump to a rope and try yanking it out with a truck. This is not only ill-advised but immensely dangerous. Pulling up a stump from the roots takes a lot of force which can end up damaging or destroying your vehicle. Often times, the rope can snap or the tree trunk can come flying out of the ground and end up hurting someone.

While you can rent stump grinders at stores like Home Depot or Lowes, most people don’t have the proper training to use them. And depending on the size you get, renting one for a day can cost you just as much as hiring out the job entirely. Smaller grinders may be cheaper to rent, but they also take longer to use. When you factor in the value of your time plus the cost of renting you won’t be saving much, if anything. You’re also on the hook if you accidentally damage underground utilities like wires, gas lines, pipes, and irrigation lines. So why risk it? Call BAM Sales, Inc. not only do we ensure our stump grinders are fully licensed and insured, but we make sure they have the required experience to know how to get the job done fast without sacrificing safety.

The cost will depend on the type of tree, the condition of the stump, its location, and the size of the equipment needed. Because there are so many factors involved, one of our team members will need to assess your stump in person to give you an accurate estimate. Regardless of the size of the job, know that our rates are some of the lowest in the area.

There are a few things that you can do to help make the process faster. First, be sure to coordinate with the city to get your utilities marked before our scheduled arrival so there are no surprises. Second, make sure to unlock your gate and clear your yard to provide access for our equipment. And third, be sure to let us know if ahead of time if you want us to leave the wood chips so we can make arrangements. Our standard procedure is to bag the chips, but they can be provided to you upon request. Most property owners are surprised at the amount of mulch produced during stump grinding so be prepared for a lot.
